J. J. Powers
PRR Manager, Passenger Rates & Tariffs

John J. Powers began working for the Pennsylvania-Reading seashore lines in 1937. He rose through the ranks to the position of Manager, Passenger Rates & Tariffs for the Penn Central and Conrail. He retired in 1978.

I received an e-mail from Sue in February 2010. It turns out that her son found my ticket collection scans from the PRR and PC. Her late father was the agent who signed the printed tickets. She wrote:

My son Joe discovered your collection last Saturday. This was much to his and my surprise cause one of the signatures on many of the tickets is my Dad / Joe's grandfather.

" JJ Powers " was my Dad and worked for most of his railroad career at PRR 30th Street Station in Philly. We have several original old tickets but your site just broadened the rail line info he had worked on re rates & tariffs.

Thank you for posting the samples of so many tickets. You brightened our day especially my son who emailed me saying "Mom, Pop-Pop is on the internet!" ( Dad passed away in 1986)

I went through a few of Dad's old RR items - some business cards with PRR, Penn Central & Conrail logos on them as well as his 1978 Retirement Party invitation. I had forgotten his original employment was with Seashore Lines in 1937.

It would be an honor to my Dad if you were to link some professional and/or personal information about him to your internet site. My son has most of the RR memorabilia (original tickets & many train schedules) now but I still remember many RR 'stories' especially Dad's RR time.
