8277 is confirmed to be back at the manufacturer for rebuilding.
R-62
total note - Eleven R-62 cars have been lost to mishaps. (cars 1366-70,
1435-37, 39, 40,1909)
R-44 SIRT note - The 64 car fleet of the Staten
Island railway are now included. Rumors abound that they will be replaced with
a future order of BMT/IND cars, however at least five are currently in Coney
Island for overhaul. The SIRT fleet will be overhauled.
R-44 total note -
The 12 cars marked TA were originally operated on the BMT-IND and were
equipped with GE controls, as were the 52 original SIRT cars.

A car 402 has been stripped at CI after the derailment at Tottenville
12/26/08.
R-160 total note - The total R-160 count will not be
provided until the entire order is
completed.
R-160
Note - 8/30/2009 - The official Operations Planning designations of the
R-160B Fleet has been split into R-160B1 (Alstom controls), and R-160B2
(Siemens controls)
R-44 & R-46 Missing cars - 9/14/2009 - Nine
cars were scrapped prior to the renumbering from the 100-399 series to the
5300+ series: 109, 120, 132, 176, 215, 248, 288, 315, and 385.
Car 227 was
transferred to the Randalls Island fire training school (after it was in a
fire).
Six R-44 cars were scrapped after the renumbering: 5248, 5282-83,
5285, 5319, and 5402.
Mis-mated set of remianing cars: 5270-5249-5271-5284.
R-46 cars 941 and1054 were scrapped before the renumbering from the
500-1278 to the 5482+ series.
December 2009 - The R-42 fleet is down
to 50 cars assigned to ENY pending the arrival of the last set of four car
units of the R-160A order, 9943-9974.
It's getting closer to the C
going to 600' trains of 10 car R-32 or eight car R-46. There is a new car
assignment sheet due out early 2010.
December 25, 2009 Rumor - 14
R-42 cars will be reactivated and assigned to ENY. 272 R-46 cars will be
transfered from Jamaica to Pitkin to replace the entire R-44 fleet before the
remaining R-32 and R-42 cars.
January 20, 2010 - R-44 cars removed
from service: 5290/5291/5293/5292 and 5342/5343/5345/5344
February 27,
2010 - The 14 R-42 (12/25/09 rumor) cars held back from scrap are still not
in service.
R-44 5354/5355/5357/5356 have been taken out of
service.
April7, 2010 - From December 18, 2009 through April 17,
2010, 64 R-44 cars have been retired.
A total of 1,232 R-32 through R-42
class cars have been reefed through April 17, 2010.
May 24, 2010 - A
total of 108 R-44 cars have been removed from service. The service cuts of June
2010 will probably see the remaining 164 cars out of service. It remains to be
seen if they will be scrapped or held for
better
times.
R-142 Pelham Note - 8/17/2009 (updated 5/24/2010) - Pelham cars 7631-7635 have
been out of service at 207th St Shop for a number of months, for an electical
problem. The actual count of available cars there is 455, though the official
assigned cars remains 460. The cars were returned to service on April 19, 2010,
returning Pelham to it's full car count.
Notes to June 18, 2010The
MTA has advertised a bid for 290 R-179 contract cars. This is the total of the
remaining R-32s and R-42s that were active on May 1. the contract
calls for 50 5-car sets to replace the R-32's and 10 4-car sets to replace the
R-42's. There is also an option for 10 more 5-car sets that would bring the
total order at 340 cars.
The 14 remaining R-42's, that have been
stored are now marked Not OK For Service.
However the car assignments for the new M srevice has not yet been released.
Next month, these cars will be removed form the counts if they are not
used.
Notes to June 27, 2010 - All of the R-160's have been
delivered. The only remaining changes due are the removal of the remaining R-44
fleet, which will probably happen as more R-46 car are transfered from Jamaica
to Pitkin/207th.
The 14 R-42 cars have been removed from the list.
The
TA's official counts still include nine R-110B cars, that are not in this
list.
Notes to July 15, 2010 - There remain only 28 R-44 cars in
A service. There are four R-46 cars that are yet to be placed into
service at Pitkin and a few more that need to be transfered from Jamaica to
Pitkin. 207th is 100% R-32 and Pitkin will become 100% R-46 by the next
update.
R-44 notes - July 19, 2010 - I received an e-mail on July
19th saying that some R-44 cars have been on the C in recent days. I
confirmed that 12 R-44 cars had been reactivated and placed into service there.
With this, they are supposed to be off the A, but as all car assignments
are guides, they might still be there too. The main reason for the reactivation
was the air conditioning of some of the R-32 cars is not reliable and with heat
of 2010, it was felt necessary to rescue the passengers. This will mean that
the R-44 cars will remain in service until at least the end of the
summer.
R-44 notes - Sept 16, 2010 - The R-44 mainline fleet is out
of service with effective September 16. (Updated 10/16/2010 with official
confirmation)
R-32 notes - Dec 12, 2010 - 10 R-32 cars have been
converted to refuse flat cars.
R-32 notes - March 1, 2011 - After
use on the fall season gel trains, eight more cars removed form service.
R-142A notes - March 1, 2011 - Althought I did not remove them
from the count, five R-142A cars have been removed from service at Westchester
Yard (#6 - Pelham servcie) for conversion to CBTC prototyping. Five more cars
will be added to the test at some later date.
