The Hudson-Bergen
Light Rail Line

A dreary opening day April 15, 2000, brought throngs of politicians to Liberty State Park station to talk (and talk and talk) about how each Opening Dayof them over and over and over waged the battle for the line over the years. The ribbon was cut and the trains began to operate with passengers. Having watched the 45th Street station construction over the last few years (I use the NJ route 169 between the Trurpike and the Bayonne Bridge), I waited in great anticipation to see the cars run in service. I had previously posted photos of construction in October 1999 and training cars in March 2000, but this was service.
Among other things, I finally found the alleged parking lots at 34th St and 45th (the latter is the only thing accessable on the east side of the bridge over the BHLR and Route 169). Up to that time, it appeared to me that the only substantial parking was at LSP. I scouted a number of other mid line photo locations that I got to on Monday for additional photos. I can only hope that the loads we saw on day one were not the maximum loads the line will carry in the future. On Monday the 17th I went out again (in the rain) to get more photos. I never saw more than 5 passengers on any train.

A few observations:

The cars should have been designed with the seats in each main section facing the end of the car
The ends of the car should have had a glass partition to afford a better view of the right of way.
Steps to the over truck seating area vs steps down to the platform. Compare Baltimore and HBLR (middle) and HBLR (end) cars
Monday 4/17 was raining. During the mid day the ran single units. All of the cars stopoped at the far end of every station, rather than next to the station canopy. This forced everyone to run in the rain to catch the trains.
Free Ride Ticket First Day ticket free rides. It looked like NJT was expecting NYC rush hour crowds (or Disneyland waiting times) at all of the stations. Employees were giving these tickets out for the day's rides.
BHLR Ticket Tickets to be used in regular service. After validation, the ticket is good for 90 minutes of POP riding.
BHLR Ticket Receipt for parking and round trip ride.
Post Card
Inaugaral Cancellation
NJT was giving away postcards and the USPS had a 'Postoffice Van' set up to cancel the purchased stamps with a special cancellation. The stamps being sold were from the railroad set recently printed by the USPS.

I don't know what to make of this. Is NJT comparing itself to NASA? How successful are they?
