New Jersey Transit
M&E Line Broad St Station
Reconstruction
The old
DL&W Commuter station at
Broad St Newark is undergoing reconstruction. The renovations include high
level platforms and reconfiguration to three tracks and one island and one side
platform. There will also be elevators between the street-mezzanine-platforms.
Let's hope it will retain its railroad flavor.

A second visit on
April 18, 2006 shows
the westbound shelter demolished, the underpass to the main entrance closed,
and the northernmost track out of service and covered by a temporary
platform.
Here are some
operations
photos
On the day the Newark Light Rail (NCS) branch to Broad St
(7/17/2006) some pictures were added to the 4/18 set. Here, the new stairways
are in place for the westbound platform. They go up to the height of the
new
platforn, then the passengers walk back down to the low level platform. The
underpass has been reopened.
Another visit to Broad St was made on
September 7th. The
frame to the westbound platform has begun. About half of the length of the
lowlevel platform has been taken out of service for the framework. westbound
passengers must walk up to the level of the new platform, then down to the
space that will be the new westbound outside track, around the platform frame
to another short stair up to the low level platform that is still in
service.

On November 9, 2006, the canopy takes
shape.
March 23, 2007 was supposed to be a warm cloudy day (but
turned out cool and rainy) I made a stop over at Broad St on the way to
Montclair for more photos. The east end of the westbound platform is in service
and the trackway for the new westbound track is taking shape. The next step is
the opening of the rest of the westbound platform and the new track. At that
time the eastbound track will be taken out of service so work can begin on the
eastbound platform.

August 9, 2007 - On my way to Montclair State
University, I had another layover at Broad St. The new island platform is still
only half in service. The eastbound platform is completely gone and work is in
progress for the new one.

After a rainy May
2009, I got out to Newark Broad St on June 30 for some followup photos. The eastbound
platform is in place, but they are still doing some trim, like painting the
yellow warning stripe.
There's a photo and historic note about the
Western Electric building next to the station, but the building is no longer
there.
